Online gambling legislation and regulation. Starting your own gambling product.

Mobile gambling
If you plan to develop an app with the ability to deposit and withdraw real money, then such a product automatically falls into the category of gambling and you will need to license your business for successful operation.
Mobile and Web Based Apps
So let’s talk about the different kinds of online gambling apps available on web and mobile. We’ll be covering both free-play gaming apps and real money casino app games you can find for iOS, Android devices and web browsers.
Mobile gambling is more common for poker, casino, bingo, and skill games. They have advantages in terms of a low barrier to enter the market, instant liquidity, product knowledge, and marketing expertise, minimal infrastructure costs, and the ability to bring a brand to the market quickly. Consequently, this form of gambling does not sit neatly with jurisdictional boundaries. Multiple gambling opportunities are available, including betting on various events and markets, in a relatively simple format. Gambling products can also be integrated into betting on television shows or virtual racing and sports games as well as offering lotteries, bingo, poker and casino games.
Most Popular Gambling Apps
Sports betting, casino, poker and lotteries are the most popular forms of online gambling. However, other forms are available too. These include the following: Bingo, slot machines, different card games, roulette and other game of chance. One of the best things about online gambling and betting apps is the number of choices you have.

Sports Betting

Betting means making or accepting a bet on the outcome of a race, competition, or other event or process, the likelihood of anything occurring or not occurring, or whether anything is or is not true. Today most sports betting is done via mobile-friendly sites and apps.
Today most sports betting is done via mobile-friendly sites and apps.
The introduction of live betting for sports like soccer and tennis means that bettors who are sitting inside stadiums watching games can now pick up their mobile devices and find real-time betting value with the best sports gambling apps. This has really unlocked a door to the future of sports gambling and the popularity of online gambling apps.

Poker

Many sites offer free poker, where no real money is wagered, although in some cases players can accumulate credits that can be exchanged for prizes. This is the case why people are going to play for real money. There is an ongoing debate over whether poker should be classified as a game of chance or skill. The parameters of legal poker playing are still unclear and differ between jurisdictions. Since you are not gambling with money, I’m pretty sure under the law it’s just a video game for now.

Blackjack

Blackjack is the game of choice to many high-rollers and do you know why? Because blackjack is a challenging, logic and skill-based game where your thinking, strategy, and calculations determine the outcome of the game.

Bingo

Bingo is one of the most popular and socially accepted games in the world. Bingo is a traditional form of gambling that has seen considerable innovation in recent years. It is also the only form of gambling recognized in the Gambling Act that does not have a specific statutory definition, the Act providing simply that “bingo” means “any version of that game, irrespective of by what name it is described”. Bingo must be played as an equal chance game. For game to be classed as “bingo” it must meet the Act’s definition of “equal chance gaming” (as opposed to casino gaming). Thus, it: must not involve playing or staking against a bank, and must be a game in which the chances are equally favorable to all participants in the sense that each ticket or chance has the same probability of success as any other.
Licensed bingo is a well-regulated and socially responsible form of gambling that takes place in a safe environment. Many sites offer multiple forms of bingo with different features, types of games, and costs of play. These sites often cater specifically for women and some research suggests that they may appeal to markets who would not typically engage in traditional forms of gambling.

Slots

Slot machine is one of the most beloved game among the gambling community and it has been a part of the industry for a long time. They provide fun and entertainment and their simplicity allows gamers to start playing at once. This can play out in different ways depending on the machine you’re playing. For instance, there’s Pick a Fortune, a five-reel, 20 line game that puts players right in the studio of a television game show, including the potential to play a Deal or No Deal-style bonus round. A super trend over the past few years is mobile-friendly slot games. These apps and websites were developed to enable players to enjoy their favorite games on their smartphones at any time. Another dominant slot trend is licensed branded slots that are based on popular movies, television, and musicians.
Virtual Money vs Real Money
Let’s find out the difference between social gambling and real money gambling, as well as the differences between gambling through apps and gambling through a web browser. It can be quite confusing trawling through all the casinos, slots, and lotteries available, both through your mobile web browser as well as through mobile app stores, in the form of downloadable apps.

Virtual money

The main difference between virtual money and real money gambling is that the in-game virtual currency in social games and gambling-type games is used only like credits that are not paid out as winnings or anything given to player in cash, making these games exempt from gambling regulations.
Virtual money is loaded on user game accounts via in-app purchases in mobile applications or the game balance funding from a card via web based applications.

Real money gambling

Real money gambling via your mobile device is only allowed in countries where laws have been passed that allow for this type of gambling online, or there are no laws in place that prevent it. The payment systems are the legal way of services payment in the gambling app, performing as the intermediary between the gambling facility and the client. With their help, users replenish deposits and withdraw funds to personal accounts in financial institutions. If the application uses the payment system of a well-known brand, that gives players additional confidence in the resource. Nowadays, there is a wide range of payment systems, some of which operate all over the world, other systems are oriented towards the citizens of one or several countries. A number of services accept money of different world currencies, while others allow currency transactions of one state only.
What is an Online Gambling Licensing
The internet has a global audience, there’s no single piece of legislation that covers the legality of online gambling for the entire world. Mobile gambling doesn’t typically accept customers from every single country in the world. It often focuses on certain specific regions.
Instead, most countries have their own local laws that deal with the relevant legal and regulatory issues.
Ultimately, questions of legality all go back to the location of the casino or where the website operates out of. In closed regulatory systems, such as Italy, France, and the Netherlands, licenses, and advertising rights are limited to domestic providers, which must be located within their country’s geographical boundaries and these are only permitted to offer some types of products. Some jurisdictions, for example, Norway, Sweden, and Canada legalize and regulate online gambling, but this is limited to a single site that is owned by the government. Under such an approach, the government becomes the operator and regulator and all revenues are returned to the government.
Remote gambling is generally permitted. That means that an operator that is licensed may provide gambling services to citizens in the country via all forms of remote communication (and using equipment that may be located in the country or abroad). Equally, a remote operator may be licensed to offer gambling services to citizens in any jurisdiction in the world using equipment located in the country. The law provides that, for each type of gambling (betting, gaming, and participating in a lottery), there will be two forms of license available: remote and non-remote forms (land-based). If you provide facilities for remote gambling, online or through other means, and advertise to consumers you will need a license from the licensing jurisdictions or local licensing authorities. Before an online gambling site signs up its first customer, before it accepts its first bet before the first card is dealt, it must be licensed by a recognized governmental entity.
Certain regions in the world have specific legislation in place that allows them to license and regulate companies that operate online gambling sites or provide industry services (such as the supply of gaming software). These regions are referred to as online gambling jurisdictions or licensing jurisdictions.
Depending on what type of entertainment you are going to implement in your internet establishment, you will have to apply for the corresponding permissions. Online gambling laws in Europe vary from one country to the next. The industry is well regulated in some countries and less so in others. There are several online gambling jurisdictions located in Europe. Some of these are members of the European Union (EU), and thus subject to the various rules and regulations of that body, while others are independent. Each of these jurisdictions has an authority that’s responsible for approving gambling sites for licenses that enable them to offer their services legally. They also regulate their licensees.
Countries that Provide Gambling Licensing
Today there are lots of licensing jurisdictions located all over the world and offering different terms for their customers. Depending on the country, licenses can be local, international (distributed in several countries), have a different set of documents for registration, costs of registration and further support, various operating conditions and other special details.

Which gambling license is both internationally recognized?

The government of Ireland offers casino operators, software, and service providers in the gambling industry, with a gambling license that allows gambling operators to conduct business related to casino, lotto, and other gaming-related activities. Ireland Gambling License is one of the most popular license for online casinos worldwide. Ireland has long been recognized as one of the preferred locations for Online Gambling operators to base their operations. This success has been due to a combination of factors, such as a progressive legislative system, political stability, first-rate telecommunications facilities, and a well established financial services industry. A wide range of gambling sites operates out of Ireland including sports betting, casino sites, poker, bingo, and more.
In stark contrast, the UK is the largest regulated market for online gambling in the world, and corporations are already comfortable exploiting the intersections of gambling and gaming, betting in-play, social gaming, Bitcoin, financial trading and spread betting, betting exchanges, e-sports and, most profitably, mobile gambling. 40% and 60% of online gambling in the UK took place in Gibraltar.

International licensing

Europe is home to the following online gambling jurisdictions: Alderney, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Malta. Malta is currently the country that is most accommodating to gambling companies, and the license offers whitelisted online gambling in sports and casino games in many European territories. But takes an extreme amount of time in paperwork and background checks. Also, you pay 5% of all your gross profit to the EU.
Among countries offering gambling licensing services, the attention should be paid to Curaçao jurisdiction, which is considered to be one of the most promising for the online gaming business.
Curaçao Internet Gaming Association (also known as Curaçao eGaming) is both a regulator and a licensor, and its licensing works worldwide except Curaçao itself, USA, France and Netherlands. Using Curacao as an example, let us examine in detail the process of obtaining a license, the necessary documents and expenses.
How to get a License on Curaçao
  • Documents necessary for company registration:
  • criminal record;
  • passport scans;
  • bank account confirmation;
  • documents proving payments for utility services.
After the company is registered, an operator can apply for the license providing the following documents:
  • a document certifying the right of domain possession;
  • description of games planned to be used in the project;
  • a list indicating countries of potential operation;
  • illustration of server locations to be used in the project;
  • a copy of the agreement with a software provider.
Gambling license cost:
  • Bank account opening $1000
  • Company registration $3600
  • Company management per year $3600
  • Application processing fee $1000
  • License fee per year $4800
  • Equipment/software fee starting from $1500
  • Server maintenance per year $6000
Apart from that pay for technical support and maintenance every year. The entire license issuing process takes between 2-4 weeks. Curacao Internet Gaming Association (CIGA) also has the power to review a license and, if it finds that an operator has breached a license condition, has the power to impose a range of sanctions including revocation of the license.
Apple and Google Gambling Rules
You’ll be surprised at the limited number of real money gambling app options available on the AppStore and Google Play Store. Most real money casino gaming is done through gambler’s mobile web browsers and not through mobile gambling apps that you’ll find for iPhone and Android phones. Apple allows online gambling applications in a few forms, and not just in places where it is explicitly permitted. They do not allow any payments through the applications – those have to be done on the websites. Apple has far stricter developer guidelines for iOS apps than Google does for Android apps, so it’s fine to assume that whatever you choose to download from iTunes is usually safe, secure, and meets a certain standard.
Any real money casino in the iTunes app is required to have proper licensing and permissions before Apple will approve the app for use or downloads. While Google Play is technically regulated, it is much more loose in what can be hosted.

Apple Store

Gambling, gaming, and lotteries can be tricky to manage and tend to be one of the most-regulated offerings on the App Store. Apple has rules for apps that support real money wagering, including sports betting and poker. Those apps and lotteries must have necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the App is used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store, and Apple rate even simulated gambling apps as appropriate only for users 17-years-old and up.

Play Store

Google keeps the reigns tight. To be able to successfully upload apps to the Google Play store, developers need to have a valid license for the specific countries they are targeting and comply with their regulations. The app must be free to download and must prevent under-age users from gambling in the app. As a final precaution, all gambling apps are required to display prominent information regarding responsible gambling practices. This brings its policy in line with the Apple App Store.
Countries where gambling is illegal
It is also important to remember that while gambling is growing rapidly in many places, in others it is totally or partially prohibited. As well as in the majority of the US, sports betting is illegal in India, Pakistan, and China, three of the largest gambling markets in the world. Most countries have rules against gambling. Almost all Islamic countries prohibit gambling of every kind, but many turn a blind eye to online gambling or simply do not have regulations in place for this grey area.
In the United Arab Emirates, however, any kind of gambling is prosecuted. National lotteries are the only legal forms of wagering on the Asian country’s mainland. Cambodia, North Korea strictly forbids online and offline gambling amongst its own citizens but allows tourists to participate in these activities.
Qatar is the strictest country of all when it comes to gambling laws. All forms of gambling activities are considered illegal, and even sports betting is not permissible.
Starting your own gambling product
Numerous online casino platforms in the market offer fantastic casino games like bingo, poker, roulette, and many more.
If you have an idea, but don’t know where to start, we advise you begin with a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) to pilot your proof of concept for investors. MVP spotlights your core features and lets your investors know there are bigger and better things to come.
For MVP you do not need a large team, just a few people are enough to create a fully functioning prototype. In the case of successful numbers of your prototype, the further development of a full-fledged product will require more team, resources and time, however you will be sure that your development and your costs will pay off.

Ignition Now Open to Australia

As you may know, Australia has passed a law recently that could cause problems for online poker. In fact, 888 has already pulled out of the country. PokerStars has said they will leave, but will stay up until the last possible minute.

This sort of gray market avails itself to certain providers. As I predicted, the US providers are stepping up to the plate. Ignition casino just opened up Poker to the Aussie markets.

Pokers Pro - please clarify the “Legality” of everything for this potential Florida online player

I have been doing extensive research and reading up of all things online poker for the past couple of weeks before coming across the legal reads just last week. From everything that I could find and link together, it seems a lot of people here are focused on the legal issue at the state level, and for Florida it seems their stance is somewhat of a “We’re to old to care about the internet” sort of stance.
However, after reading about the UIGEA which is on the federal level, I don’t seem to see how anyone can comfortably play real cash online poker. I understand that the wire act is no longer enforced (or is it now? This seems to be confusing). But the UIGEA should make it illegal for online poker in every state, am I right or wrong?
I’m not worried about it on my state level, we don’t even have income tax and they are too old fashioned to care about making a law against it (nor foabout it at all). But from everything I’ve read, if you have to still pay taxes on your winnings, then I don’t know how you can do that and still play online poker if it is deemed illegal by the federal level. Seems like being a drug dealer and then paying taxes stating you made your money from selling drugs. Is this just declaring you are going against the law?
I want to play professionally, but I want to be sure I can still reclaim my winnings into my proper bank. I don’t feel comfortable enough to trust Bitcoin for my winnings like others have suggested... But for those who are comfortably doing this professionally, please explain all this to me so I can at least give this a shot maybe

Why Sell?

Why would anyone sell?
It's too bad people are glued to their hourly account balance and missing out on the big picture. Emotionally distraught people are selling. Financially wise people are buying. This summer, there is going to be alot of bitter folks that wish they never logged into their accounts on Feb 1 2018. Countries around the world are not banning crypto. They are simply cleaning things up and gearing up for full blown legal crypto. Sure, there will be new rules but crypto is here to stay. If tomorrow marked the final day of cryptocurrency history, I could understand the panic and the selling. However, do you think the Canadian gov't would be using Ethereum for record keeping if crypto was in trouble? Would IBM be partnering with Stellar if crypto was doomed? Would Microsoft be sponsoring NEO dev competitions if crypto was ending? Would Samsung be pouring big money into building and selling cryptocurrency mining chips if Crypto was truly in trouble? Politicians are pumping the breaks until they figure out how to cash in. They did they same thing with daily fantasy sports, online poker, gambling, and cannabis. In 2015, Daily Fantasy Sports was legal in 45 states. In 2016, it was legal in only 10 states because politicians wanted to shut it down until they figured out how to make money off it for themselves. Today, DFS is legal in 41 states. That's right, from an unregulated 45 (2015), cracked down to 10 (2016), and now that politicians can make money off the regulated industry, it's legal in 41. Folks, crypto is going through the growing pains of becoming a full blown accepted industry. Check out online poker...
Whether it's online poker, cannabis, daily fantasy sports, or cryptocurrency, the people vote with their wallets. Sure, governments always get involved so they can make a buck too (if it was about our safety, health, and well being then guns would be outlawed). Hold your coins if you haven't sold. Buy coins this weekend at a massive discount. Embrace the future. Expect dips along the way. We are riding a climate change graph that continually trends up. So what if there is a record cold winter here or there. The zig-zagging line is trending up from year to year. Hold and/or buy. You will have major profits should you choose to sell this summer, fall, or in 2019. Keep your eye on the prize, stay off reddit, stay away from "news", and trust your instincts when you realized months or years ago that this was an unstoppable revolution: the future.

Addiction

Illinois legalized weed yesterday by way of our state legislature, as opposed to a voter-approved ballot measure. We're the first state to legalize weed this way. The new law goes on the books 1/1/2020.
There are some real pluses to this thing, including clearing the records of people who got busted for 30 grams or less. Anyone who got tagged for between 30-500 grams can petition the courts for expungement. This could involve as many as 750,000 cases.
Communities hit hardest by prohibition can cut the line on the licensing process as "social equity applicants" as well as benefit from $30million put into a low-interest loan program for those same communities to launch start up weed shops. (This will boil the blood of people who consider the black community to be a "victim constituency" ...which makes me like it even more.)
Per Marijuana Moment Taxes on cannabis sales would be based in part on THC concentration. Flower containing up to 35 percent THC would be taxed at 10 percent, whereas products with more than 35 percent THC would be taxed at 25 percent. Cannabis-infused products would be subject to a 20 percent tax. The state’s 6.25 percent sales tax would also apply, with local jurisdictions having the option to impose an additional 3.5 percent tax.
I've never had flower with more than 35% THC, nor do I expect to. I think 30% is the highest level I've ever tried. It was plenty.
Pritzker's budget includes expected revenue from weed taxes, with some studies saying it could bring in as much as $500million in 2020.
My state rep is a guy named Marty Moylan. He's a Democrat from Des Plaines. For those of you from out of state Des Plaines is pronounced Dess Planes, which I'm sure pleases Luis Jolliet & Jacques Marquette to no end. Marty voted against legalizing weed, saying it's addictive and destructive. So fuck Marty Moylan.
In related news, Marty has a fucking casino in his town and I'll be very interested to see how Marty votes on legalized sports betting today, or maybe tomorrow. They're working Sunday, because the next legislative get-together is in October.
I'm against legalized sports betting. It's actually addictive, unlike weed, and it truly has destroyed countless lives, unlike weed. Unless you count weed prohibition, and the lives it fucked up.
Back in the day I had the pleasure of working with a large number of degenerate gamblers. The limo company I drove for was owned by a dickhead named George Jacobs. George was (maybe still is) the head of the Illinois Chapter of Gamblers Anonymous. George recruited limo drivers at the GA meetings. Of the 250-300 drivers he employed I'd guess that no fewer than 40% were people who came from Gamblers Anonymous, including Vyto Spakauskus, a member of my golf foursome for about 10 years.
One day at a local track named Cog Hill, our regular course, we were on the 7th hole when Vyto announced he had to leave. He called up to the pro shop and asked them to send out a cart to pick him up. Told us he had an emergency and he would explain later. About 5 holes later, the Cog Hill people shuttled Vyto back out to us and he finished the round. We finally got him to tell us what the fuck was wrong. He had forgotten to buy the daily $30 in Lotto tickets for himself & his 80 year old mother and tonight was the big roll-over, monster, gajillion dollar blah blah blah.
I simmered with fucking anger for the last 5 holes. When we got to the 19th hole and ordered a pitcher of beer I explained to Vyto that he was out of the group. As I explained to him...I love you buddy, but you're a 49 year old man who lives with his mother. You're a degenerate gambler to begin with, but even worse than that you're a degenerate gambler who gambles on possibly the dumbest game ever invented. You spend almost a grand a month on the stupid fucking Lotto despite the fact that you're in debt up to your fucking eyeballs. And that's your problem, not mine. You want to flush your money down the toilet, by all means go right ahead. But here's the thing Vyto...you borrowed money from me to pay for your fucking golf, and then you walked out in the middle of the round. So fuck you. Get help.
I was a former limo driver by that point so the only time I ever saw Vyto was at Cog Hill on Fridays, so it came as no surprise that was the last thing I ever said to Vyto. Never spoke to each other again. I got a call recently from another member of the old foursome. Mark lives in Vegas now. Just called to shoot the shit, and in the process he asks me if I heard about Vyto. I said something like "No, but is this about Bitcoin?" Turns out Vyto's mom died, left him the house, and something like six months later he had pissed away the house playing the poker machines at a casino in Aurora. The whole house. Supposedly something like $140,000. Took out a reverse mortgage and blew it all gambling on possibly the second dumbest form of gambling ever invented.
Don't know exactly why I'm so adamantly opposed to gambling, but I am, and especially sports betting. It's the only vice I can think of that riles up the puritan in me. I'm a huge sports fan, and I can only see bad shit happening when gambling and pro sports start inter-mingling. Players and referees are human beings. Some can be bought for the right price. There's a reason the Black Sox were all permanently banned from baseball. Pete Rose same. Whether it's Tim Donaghy fucking around with the spread in NBA games, Northwestern running back Dennis Lundy shaving points, or the Boston College basketball team doing same the lines get blurred. One doesn't have to "throw a game" to see how gambling can fuck up the integrity of a contest. Those cases all came when gambling was illegal. Imagine what it will be like now.
If we're going to talk about destructive addictions I can say with certainty that gambling is one of them. I suppose it goes back to all my interaction with twelve-stepping chauffeurs. I mean sure, if somebody wants to fuck up their life that's their business but don't fuck up my golf game.

Why would anyone sell? Bitcoin now costs the same as it did the day after Thanksgiving. Ethereum costs the same as it did on Jan 2. Neo is currently twice as much as it was Dec 21. Which gambling stocks would you invest in?

So it looks like online poker is currently legal in a few states and more are expected to follow in the near future. I expect a second coming of a poker boom with this new generation. There are two types of industries I'm interested in that are related to this.
Video gaming stocks Casinos
Nevada currently has it legalized, but I expected when it goes national you will have big time casino chains like Las Vegas Sands start up their own online casino poker rooms as a platform for customers. Perhaps with loyalty programs so when they spend so much they could get free rooms in vegas and what not.
I'm not high on Zynga unless they really consider going in the poker route. They already have Zynga Poker on Facebook and a mobile app. Electronic Arts also owns WSOP app so perhaps that might be another gaming stock that could take a slice of the pie.
I'm not too familiar with international stocks.

This Libertarian is FOR gun control. Get the popcorn.

I'm a lifelong Libertarian and I think we should outlaw semi-automatic rifles.
TLDR: No one NEEDS to fire 45 rounds per minute and 'gun culture' can fuck right off.
Libertarianism is about preventing fellow humans from being able to leverage too much power. That's the primary concern about big government which is a concentration of power. We support a national military to preserve our country's sovereignty. We support the existence of a robust legal system so there is recourse when individual rights are violated and contracts are broken. We support a local police force to protect our personal rights to peace and autonomy from theft and violence.
At our core, we are against the threat or act of violence against peaceful citizens. We believe all individuals should be able to peacefully engage with society in a voluntary way. Live and let live. My freedom to swing my arms ends where your nose begins.
Even most hardcore libertarians and right-wingers are already in agreement that individuals shouldn't have access to weapons of mass murder. That you can't own a tank and you can't have VX gas isn't declared a violation of individual freedom. We've already drawn the line that some weapons are just too powerful to allow one citizen to wield. So really, the debate is where to strike the balance between the right to bear arms and the right to live in a peaceful society with a state-imposed limit on what one deranged maniac can accomplish on a whim.
-------------Unanimously banned for individual ownership--------------
  1. Nuclear weapons
  2. Chemical weapons
  3. Biological weapons
  4. Military combat weapons (grenades, rocket launchers, Howitzers, mortars)
  5. Military assault vehicles (tanks, Bradlys, Jeeps with mounted machine guns)
  6. Fully automatic firearms (M16, Uzi, Ak47)
----------------Weapons legally allowed----------------------
'7. Semi-automatic rifles
'8. Chuck Norris
'9. Semi-automatic handguns
'10. Bolt-action rifles, shotguns
'11. Stun guns
We should move the line down one more. 45 shots per minute is too much power for one individual. 10 shots per minute rate of bolt action rifles is good enough for hunting, home defense, and 'sport'.
I realize that many libertarians here will call me a hypocrite and an idiot and point out how flawed my logic is. I can't blame you and philosophically you are right and I am wrong. This a pragmatic point I'm making. I want to explore the idea that being for gun regulations can be compatible with libertarianism. My reasoning on the usual points:
A: "We have a right to create a militia to defend ourselves against tyranny."
That ship has sailed. The 'state' has weapon categories 1-6 and a total monopoly on military force. If they want our life and land, they can take it. I'm not saying that is an ok situation, but it's a separate topic than selling AR15s. I don't want to allow crazy Billy in mom's basement 45 shots per minute because we still fantasize about 'holding off the feds' when the shit hits the fan. OF COURSE the police are too militarized and aggressive and we have to work on correcting that, but it's a separate issue that having our own arsenal does nothing to solve or even mitigate.
B: "Criminals don't follow laws. Passing a new law will only hurt law abiding citizens"
Supply matters. I said I was a lifelong Libertarian and this is one of our core arguments against statists. You. Are. Right. Obviously. Every murderer breaks existing laws and doesn't give a shit about new rules. OF COURSE banning semi-autos won't magically keep criminals from getting them through the black market. However, refer to the list and think of the supply. How many criminals are getting their hands on atomic bombs and VX nerve gas? Zero. OF COURSE There is a black market for machine guns and fuck the military-industrial-complex for supplying them. But there is a MUCH lower supply of machine guns in circulation than AR15s. Supply matters. Chicago and St Louis gang bangers aren't using grenades and Uzis not because they are impossible to get, but because handguns are FAR easier to get. This little shit in Florida could have probably found an Uzi on the black market via the dark web and bitcoin. OF COURSE evil will always find a way, but evil tends to be lazy and impulsive. Instead of choosing the best black market solution, the piece of shit in Florida lazily settled for the most effective death tool readily available down the street. Supply matters.
C: "We are 350 million people, the real risk of mass shootings is statistically zero. So banning something that 99.9% of the time isn't used for murder is just playing into the hands of the statists/russians/lesbians/illuminati/immigrants/matt damon/kuks/pussyhats etc."
Of course our worrying about mass shootings is way out of proportion to the risk. Though the cost is way more than just the few unlucky victims. Every single school in the country now has to 'prepare' for this and every single student is now participating in shooting drills just like fire drills and just like they all did with nuclear war drills. That's a HUGE cost administratively (at taxpayer expense) and it's an even higher mental health cost. The Right's general answer right now is to supply armed guards and armed teachers. Most these tragedies HAD a guard on campus at the time! Should we make it 10 guards and a roof sniper? Fuck you, I'm not paying those salaries from my tax dollars just because you want the 'freedom' of 45 shots per minute to blow off steam. That's a neocon solution, not a libertarian one. Oh you want to arm teachers so the extra cost is nil? Did you go to high school? How many times did you personally witness the weird kid flipping out in a classroom? Imagine every 'weird kid' is now fully aware that every teacher has a gun in the desk or a holster? Sounds like a perfect way to add a hundred double murders per year in an attempt to cut the mass shooting body counts in half.
D. "Won't eliminate attacks, they'll just used handguns, trucks, pipe bombs, trebuchets, ninja stars etc"
No shit. Evil finds a way. Can we at least limit Evil to pausing between shots and having to stop and re-load after 6 shots? That's an absolutist argument that disregards the grey lines we've already drawn. This Florida fucker had smoke grenades. If real grenades were a legal hobby in this country like AR15's, the body counts would be in the hundreds. There is NO WAY to stop insane violence but we can limit the effectiveness of the most effective murder tools legal available.
E. "I have a right to defend my life, family, and property from criminals who aren't following the same gun rules"
This is a really strange argument to make if you are going to appeal to statistics for the other arguments. The odds of any citizen to find themselves in that situation is infinitesimal. For those rare encounters that DO occur, the odds of the outcome being different because of a low rate of fire is a tiny subset of an already rare event. Your aim in the vast majority of self-defense scenarios is to stop ONE human. A mass killer's aim is every human in sight. 45 rounds per minute is a gigantic boost to the lunatic's effectiveness and a very small boost to self-defense. The pro/con of legit use vs criminal goals is WAY is disproportionately in favor of the bad guys. If you are REALLY concerned that a shotgun just isn't tactical enough to repel intruders, then I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree where the 'line' is.
F: "I need it for hunting varmints!"
Had to put this straw-man in there. No self-respecting hunter would admit they need 45 rounds per minute to kill furry woodland creatures.
G: "Fuck you I enjoy playing GI Joe target-practice as a hobby and I'm not hurting anyone. Come and take them!"
You are really appealing to "it's fun and cool" to justify the 'sport' of target shooting with something designed to kill multiple living things with ease? Buy more inexplicably camouflaged items, lift your truck a few more inches, lift weights, play poker, adopt a pit bull, blast Rob Zombie, insult my mom on COD, get viagra, remove all the mufflers in your life, wear MMA shirts, get sleeve tats. If you have a need to look and feel like a bad-ass then there are better ways to fill that hole in your sensitive ego. There is a gigantic masculinity problem these days and men everywhere are struggling on how to act without losing their self-esteem. Schools in particular are enforcing behavior and standards that are a better fit for women and that is a huge problem. Men are confused and rebelling and you can't blame them. But there's a perfectly good middle ground between being a spineless 'soy boy' and 'intimidating tough guy'. John Wayne didn't need a lift kit and a machine gun bumper sticker to remind bystanders of his manliness. I'm tired of taking the side of these insecure 'bad asses' Rambo-wannabes in this gun debate. The only people you are impressing with your macho bullshit are other insecure men and shallow women. The rest of us feel sorry for you. Nor do I intend to join the ranks of the sniveling virtue-signaling constant whiners of the left. Both these groups of pathetic man-children can get a grip and stop infringing on my kids' right to peace and liberty.
"What a cuck! There's no difference between a hunting rifle and AR15!" Yes, so why are you buying the 'tactical' looking one and the matching tattoo? The argument that they are identical in function says just as much about you owning one as it does about ignorant liberal activists. Why is demand for the cool black one through the roof? To pretend that the 'tough guy' image of a black rifle with a handle on top vs a brown hunting rifle isn't part of the appeal to Crazy Billy is being willfully obtuse.
H: "LOL, he called this thing on of those things and thinks this thing does that so he knows NOTHING about guns and should shut the hell up."
Nobody likes pedants and everyone hates you at parties but smiles as they suffer through your lectures on your niche interests. And nobody says 'ought' in place of a zero unless they are British or trying to sound badass talking about gunz. I'm aware that '45 rounds per minute' is a gross generalization and that you can fire an AR15 about twice a second but that doesn't mean you can fire 120 rounds per minute because of clip sizes and jams due to overheating. I grew up on a farm, and have done plenty of hunting with semi-auto rifles. My dad was a cop and his sidearms and other weapons were a constant presence in our house. I'm not coming at this from an ignorant 'all guns are scary and bad' experience. Though I haven't had firearms in my life for a long while and am obviously biased against 'badass gun culture'.
I: "It's a mental health issue!"
Of course it is. That's even MORE reason to prevent access to mass murder tools. We have to address mental health. This isn't an eitheor thing.
This was almost painful to write, as I can't stand the logic and motivation behind most anti-gun zealots either. We can find a better balance though and it wouldn't mean we are 'giving up our right to bear arms'. Is there a SINGLE libertarian here who's with me on this?

/R/eading Cardano science papers #mytake

Hi guys. Eystein from Cardanowatchdogs here. I wanted to try to look into some of the scientific background of Cardano and with my own words describe why I think these are important for the community and potential users to be aware of.
My contribution today to direct attention to the article by Duncan and Edsko on Formal specifications for a Cardano Wallet. They look at what Wallets do and they do it because (as from the article) "To build reliable software we must have reasonable and precise answers to these questions and our definitions must cover all cases and points in time, even the unusual cases. " My own question when reading this is - If a government or corporation was to look at a Blockchain technology with or without the rigor of a formal specification what do you think they would choose if otherwise equal?
In any case I hope we can spark some discussion on these scientific articles if others in the community are up for it. If I get some response I will dig more into the article tomorrow :)
I also compiled a list that I will maybe go through and I encourage others in the community to discuss, share, and engage others in the discussion of the Scientific research done by IOHK on Cardano as this deserves credit not only for Cardano but for furthering the blockchain field. So far published on IOHK website (I skipped one article on ETC - and I am sure many more papers are in the pipeline!)
